The Eight Wonders of Middlesbrough

Another Changing Places toilet in Middlesbrough was opened in the Rainbow Leisure Centre on 4th December 2013 bringing the grand total to eight across the town. Members of the Community Inclusion Group from The Manor Community Hub were there amid the blue and white balloons to cut the ribbon and visit the facility for the first time. Councillor Nicky Walker supported the opening of the Changing Places toilet and said "I'm really pleased that the Rainbow Centre, which already offers a friendly and accessible environment for those with disabilities and is where Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club train, has been added to council venues offering this excellent facility. It really does maximise the opportunities for people who have a disability to participate in sport and keep fit."
John Clifford the Rainbow Leisure Centre manager stated that “the provision of a Changing Places toilet within the leisure centre enables so many more people to enjoy a wide variety of activities whilst visiting the area and it is a fantastic addition to the facilities at the Rainbow”.
The campaign for Changing Places in Middlesbrough moved into gear in 2010 when the first facility was opened at the bus station by Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson. Since then, facilities have been opened at a variety of locations including two resource centres, Myplace, James Cook Hospital, Neptune Leisure Centre and Stewart Park. A total of eight facilities is a proud achievement for the town after several years of campaigning.
