Changing Places a Sterling Winner

RIBA Stirling Prize 2014: Liverpool's Everyman Theatre named winner
The rebuilt Everyman Theatre, the “theatre of the people” in Liverpool that launched the careers of actors including Jonathan Pryce and Julie Walters, has won the most prestigious award in British architecture.
The judges of the RIBA Stirling Prize said the 2014 winner was “truly for every man, woman and child” and we agree as the theatre included a Changing Places toilet in the project allowing people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, and others who need additional support, to enjoy the theatre.

It beat a strong shortlist that included the Shard, the Library of Birmingham, the London Aquatics Centre, the Manchester School of Art and the London School of Economics Student Centre.
Members of the Changing Places consortium are especially delighted as another Sterling finalist, the Library of Birmingham, also has a Changing Places toilet as part of their new facilities.

Both the Library of Birmingham and Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre have expertly replaced existing buildings, in turn winning over members of the local community to become destinations that entice people in. They are excellent examples of creating spaces worthy of immense civic pride which can now include all members of the community thanks to their Changing Places facilities.
The official sponsor of the Changing Places campaign is Aveso Ltd. Aveso hope that its support for the campaign will help it achieve its target of 1000 registered Changing Places toilets within the next three years.
